A Tale of Two Cellies - Nokia N95 or E90

November 23rd, 2007 - posted in Announcements, Nokia

Nokia E90Can you believe it? – I have been so busy with work I haven’t even bothered to buy a new phone in almost 6 months! My current handset is a Sony Ericsson S500i which is amazing by the way (except for some cracking keys but that’s a different story). The problem is, I am ITCHING for a new handset. At the moment I am eyeballing two nokia phones: the Nokia N95 (8gb) and the Nokia E90.

The N95 is hands down, AMAZING, and has everything I would ever want in a phone except for the full size keyboard. Honestly that is the only real fault I can give it, the only other thing would be its size but its not much bigger than my old N80 so I think I can live with that.

A full size keyboard has been beckoning me though, and although some of the new blackberry phones are looking good I just don’t think I could handle the tiny qwerty setup. That being said, as far as qwerty phones go the E90 is the grand-daddy of them all with a grand-daddy of a price to boot… around $900.00! It also has a huge beautiful screen which would be great for watching movies away from home.

Decisions, decisions… I almost talked myself into purchasing one of the new sidekick LX models today but decided against spending 300 dollars on a phone that is subpar for my standards. I know I would just be bored with it in 2 weeks anyway, no point in extending my contract on a locked phone.

Someone please help me, what would you choose? The powerful and beautiful n95 or the ultimate but HUGE E90?

I would buy the E90. SO much cooler and, also so much more computer-a-like. Yes, it may be big, but sometimes bigger is better. :) Only negative thing about this kind of “phone” is the cell, it is never enough..

Ps. Are planning to write about that S500i(I mean the full review)? I would love to hear that has there been any problems in it. :)

I’m going for the n95 myself, i’ll hopefully be purchasing it next week, i cant wait, n95 is way too awesome!

I just sold my s500i. I was considering the E90, but there are a lot of complaints about this device. Previous communicator owners complain about the lack of shortcuts (for eg. new appointments, CTRL+N), lack of good PIM functionality. Furthermore, Nokia seems to have discontinued the development of Symbian 8.0 platform, in favor 6.0. Therefore the E90 now shares the same software as the N95 (6.0), however, unoptimized for the dual (wide) screen of the E90. Calendar functionality leaves a lot to be desired, when compared to the 9300i or PPC competitors.)

I am considering to buy a very inexpensive used 9300i for the mean time, while Nokia fixes its current problems, and release the successor of the E90.

just wondering, where did you go for?

    Michael

    E90 Rocks!

    Hi again,

Question: Are you planning on reviewing the sony ericsson w580i? Because I have been told it is the same phone as the s500i, but I’m not sold. Maybe you’ll have a review on down the way… =o) Here is hoping…

I think N95 is cute. A fellow blogger suggested N95. I am kind of eyeing iPhone to replace my Palm Treo. I will see.

Great info on cell phones, an area in which I am a total blank. With more and more people trying to reach me all the time while I’m away from home, I’ve just gotta start operating within cell phone reach.

    Thanks for the info.

    how about nokia n96

  15. Carrizo Says:

I’l be waiting until next autumn and then there will be Nokia N96 16G.

  16. Ahmed Eltawil Says:

Even though the E90 has a big wide screen, I am pretty confident you wont find yourself watching movies on it. Or on anything smaller than your standard tv.
If you’re not into the whole QWERTY keyboard idea, then why even consider the E90?
I would say the Nokia N95 would suit you a lot better and will fit in with your lifestyle.

  17. Batterytex batteries Says:

I kind of like what I see in the picture — the E90. It looks like a little laptop that’s capable of everything. I bring my laptop everywhere, and to have the benefits of a laptop without the bulk is a great thing. You’re right to be hooked on Nokia, they make some of the best phones in the market.

N-93 is incredible, I have l n-93, also is good but not as much as this.
The winner is N-95 for my.

  24. ParanoidX2 Says:

Hey, what about this Bluetooth hacking situation: It is my understanding a person with a bit of knowhow and your cell # can hack into your cell without you knowing about it and listen to a conversation while your phone is in your pocket or on the desk. Like an open microphone. You don’t need to me using your phone it just needs to be powered up. Do wee need a firewall for our Cell phones now too? Oh and never mind that anyone with a reason to want to know where you are can find you, I believe within 100 ft. As long as your phone is on.

ParanoidX2… Because I’m Twice as Paranoid as your average Joe.

  25. poemas Says:

I definitely choose the E90 because it looks like a little laptop and because of the keyboard also
    :-)
I might be wrong but I check the n95 and it doesn’t have a keyboard, the keyboard is good for fast email and text message.

  26. MetropolisMom Says:

Thanks for dropping by to my site. I was on the same dilemma a few months back. I am not sure what to buy, if I will go for the Nokia E61i or Nokaia E90. There are things that you must consider before making a decision. First, you need to know your needs. Are you buying the phone just for the purpose of using it as a handyphone? Are you buying it because you have plans in making use of it in your daily internet activities (like blogging or whatever you do in the internet)? Second, do you consider the size? Would you like a phone that is handy or bulky? Nokia E90 is far bulky compared to N95. And last, your budget. I considered this three things before and I end up buying the E61i series. So far I am enjoying the phone and I have no regrets of buying it over the E90. Good Luck!

I would just get the one that looks more impressive. I’m really into phones like the Voyager & Blackberries right now though.

  29. Tiny Tiger Says:

Like you said.. ‘The powerful and beautiful n95′ At Telecom 3, they review the N95 and judging from that, I’d get it also to be fair.

  30. koncling Says:

is this the Nokia communicator generation…?
    the design look familiar

  31. Wawan Says:

I prefer the E90 for business, easier to type & do a office job.
N95 is good for: 5M pixel camera, but bad video shooting, the exposure is dark…or maybe I am not trained to do it?

The battery won’t last for 2 days, I have to re-charged it every night.
Why don’t try the new slim & sleek Nokia E71? I believed this one will be a famous gadget on E-series.
Try to but E71 in the next month & change my old E61…

Does any one knows how to get nokia e90 to start playing youtube videos…
it says flash version not supported..

  36. Nokia news Says:

It definitely depends on what your needs are.

Personally the n95 is more suitable for me, as it’s nice and pocketable on nights out. I have my iPhone for day to day browsing, calendars etc.

A friend of mine has both but uses the e90 all the time, he uses the net on the move tons.

    Horses for courses.

  37. Mobile Blogger Says:

If only these could be combined. N95=Entertainment machine….E90 has a QWERTY keyboard. Would love both in one.

  38. Paul Terry Walhus Says:

I’m trying to chase down a rumor that I heard on Adam Curry and John Dvorak’s “No Agenda” podcast that the Nokia e71 phone is a self contained wifi hotspot. I looked up the spec and didn’t see any mention of this so maybe it’s a “hidden feature”. What’s your take on the E71?

  39. Paul Terry Walhus Says:

OK got to the bottom of it, here’s how it becomes a wifi hotspot, it must not be a built in feature:

JoikuSpot is free and secure Mobile HotSpot solution that turns Nokia phones to a WLAN HotSpot. JoikuSpot software is installed directly to the phone. When switched on, laptops and iPods can establish instant, secure and fast WLAN connection via smartphone’s JoikuSpot HotSpot using phone’s own 3G internet connection. Multiple devices can connect to JoikuSpot in parallel and seamlessly share the same 3G internet connection. You can use JoikuSpot to access internet e.g. on the train, car, sailing boat, summer cottage, hotel, while walking, or when at remote office–whereever you are.

Version 2.1 fixes external GPS bug for Nokia N65 and similar phone without built-in GPS.

  43. Blade Says:

Definately the E90. N95 looks good but experience with the N80 have tarnished my view of the Nseries. Besides that I like communicators although size can be an issue, how can you get a nice big screen and a keyboard in a small device? Bluetooth keyboards are ok but that means carrying one around and the having to find a flat surface to use it, with the communicator you can use it anywhere - given that if you are out and about you can use the qwerty keyboard as a generously sized thumb pad. Also with the E90, you can access ALL the functions from the cover phone as well.

I’ve chosen a different route: mobile phone + internet tablet. In my case these are SE W890i which is a very nice and small HSDPA phone with an excellent battery life, and Nokia N810 which is a fantastic device with qwerty keyboard, gps, wi-fi, bluetooth (for tethering to the mobile phone), 800×480 display, gecko based (mozilla/firefox engine) browser…

Sure, these are two devices but this way I have longer battery life, I could use the tablet while talking on the phone and I may leave the tablet at home if I decide to go really light.

I’m in Europe though - don’t know how’s the 3G coverage in the US.

  47. penpusher Says:

I fell in love with the N95 the first I saw it in the hands of my friend. However, I got turned off by its seeming bulkiness. I am now eyeing the N82 but I was looking around and saw some PDAs from http://www.pressdigital.com.au/ and realized that this might be the types of phone I require since I usually use my phone for everything from personal to business transactions. They also have this Rugged Samsung Q1UP Case too. Now that would be too great to pass up!

  48. Vanni Says:

I am comfortable using N95, maybe because of the features of that phone.

  49. David martin Says:

Well! i believe that E90 is much better than N95..bcz its too slow :(

  50. Stefan Töpfer Says:

I’m always disappointed with the web browsers on these devices. Which web enabled mobile is the best for web use? How compatible with html standards are they. Would be interesting to hear what you think about that? I use an iPhone and I like it, but some of our users will not consider the iPhone, so what advice do I give them?
