MOTOROKR E6 - A cheaper alternative to the iPhone?

March 31st, 2007 - posted in Motorola

motorokr e6 As hype surrounding the upcoming Apple iPhone and LG Prada phone begin to surface, interest in touch screen cellphones is increasing so I went ahead and ordered the Motorola ROKR E6 about a week ago. This is an early demo showing off some of its features, Give me a week or two to really use the phone in and out for about a day and then I will post a FULL detailed review of my thoughts. Click through for a quick video clip of the phone.

Early comments would be that the Linux OS isn’t as horrible as most Motorola phones have been in the past, the screen is fairly responsive and I find that I really only need to press the button more than once in instances where I am not giving the phone my full attention and have actually missed the button. I don’t know how I feel about this touch screen thing though, even just navigating your phone book or declining a call while driving (not that I suggest it) goes from dangerous on a regular phone to EXTREMELY dangerous on a touch screen phone. You really have to give it your full attention. Also as of now I really miss that tactile feedback from real buttons, luckily this phone does have some regular buttons at the bottom for cases when I don’t want to actually look down at my phone. For example, lets say if I want to decline a phone call by reaching in my pocket and pressing decline; The E6 actually has the standard red decline / hang up button that most RAZR line phones have but when the iPhone and Prada phones come out, I could see that as being a real annoyance.

Well maybe after a week or two of using this as my primary phone will change my mind. Stay tuned to cellrater.com, the new layout should be going up in the next few days, I am catching up on posts right now and we are off to a great start. Thank you for visiting and if you have any comments let us know.

Does it have any cool ringtones or other fun stuff? That touch screen didn’t seem to work too well. Tell me if you have any frustrations with that. Also, let me know if you have misdialing and mistexting issues.

    Thanks,
    Sonia

    P.S.
Going to photoshop world conference this week!

The ring tones are pretty average, but you can easily add mp3s to the memory card or to the phone itself and set that as your ringer.

Like i said in the post, I don’t have as much trouble as I thought with the touchscreen, usually it works pretty well unless you just aren’t looking where you are pressing. Its not so much a matter of it being un-responsive.

There is a scene in the video clip when it shows my missed call and it looks like I am pressing ok but what you can’t see in the video is that ‘OK’ was grayed out and not an option so I was pressing it and it wasn’t doing anything.

Text messaging is kind of hard, but I will go over it in detail in about a week or two, its just a matter if getting used to the tiny on screen keyboard or writing on the screen. Neither are as fast as a real keyboard or buttons in my opinion. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

    Hi,

I want to know how is the video playing capabilities of the phone. Does it play DIVX and other formats ? Also I want to know whether is the video quality equivalent to the Apple iPod video? Eagerly awaiting your reply as I am confused between the Motorola Ming and the Rokr E6.

    Thanks,
    Sudharsan

  4. Honchay Says:

This cellphone has a nice look, have a smartphone functions and its not too big, but it seems a bit simple and the screen doesnt look soo good and clear, compared to other smartphones or like Nokia N73, or something like, but the most impotant thing is! What about text messaging? too hard? waiting for ur full detailed review plz! The bad thing? Only Tri-band… and no Wi-Fi

  5. cellrater Says:

Sudharsan, the default video player is Real Player (GAG!) but the phone I got came with a cd which had some conversion software and some video editing software to make the transition a bit easier. The video quality of the phone would depend upon the type of file you are playing. Videos shot by the phones camera will probably be poor quality as those are only shot at 12 to 15fps (frames per second) and the lens isn’t commercial grade. I don’t know if I would use this phone to watch movies on, the screen is a bit smaller than the LG Prada and the upcoming iPhone. — If you are deciding between this and the Motorola Ming then I guess I would suggest this one (having never tested the Ming) simply because this is the Moto Ming’s older sibling. This phone is based upon the same user interface and shares a lot of features with the ming. Personally I think they just cleaned up some Ming features and put it in a sexier case and called it the MotoRokr, but thats just me. A friend of mine had a ming, I haven’t showed him this phone yet but I will let you know what he says about it when I see him this weekend.

Honchay, the screen is actually pretty decent but you are right not up to the quality of the Nokia N-Series phones (then again what phones are). But for the size and for the price the quality is above average for phones in it price range. Text messaging is kind of a pain, the on-screen keyboard is pretty tiny and you cant flip it over to landscape. You REALLY have to use the stylus to hit the buttons when text messaging and although its not terribly slow it does take some getting used to. I can navigate all parts of the phone with my finger but the text messaging is close to impossible without the stylus. Maybe I just have fat fingers? — I will have a full video review sometime between the 7th and the 21st. I just want to make sure that I really get to know what the good and bad points of this phone are and I don’t want to cheat you guys with a 3 day review and then find out after a week or two of using it that something I overlooked was a huge pain in the ass. — Oh, also about the last comments you made about it being tri-band, while looking up my T-Mobile settings I did find some forums on the web which explain how to convert this phone from Tri-Band to Quad-Band. No wi-fi though so you are still out of luck on that one.

  6. Sudharsan Says:

    Hi,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am planning to buy a phone which doubles up as an Video Player so that I can watch movies on the go (like an Apple ipod). I travel frequently and that too long distances. I am a currently in India and do not have any travel plans for a month I thought I can ponder on getting a mobile phone which doubles as an Video Player. Please provide your suggestions.

    Regards,
    Sudharsan

  7. Max Says:

Hey I want to buy a motorola rokr e6. Would you be interesed in my V3i Dolce and Gabbana? Also..would you reccommend this phone. Is it worth buying the Iphone or should I go with this. How did you set up the browser for tmobile and everything? It looks great, a newer look to pda’s. Does it only go to google on the setup browser?

  8. Max Says:

also, is there an extra charge for browser use, google, or email (tmobile)?

  9. Max Says:

also, sorry, what is the browser runnig on, the tmobile network or wireless internet?

  10. cellrater Says:

Sudharsan: Did you see the post I made yesterday about the Samsung Ultra Video, that may be a cool alternative. I will look into it deeper later this week and see if I can find something really great for watching videos. Out of the phones out right now, and off the top of my head I would suggest the Nokia N95.

Max: Sorry, but I am not in the market for a V3i at this time, Thank you nonetheless. I would recommend this phone for anyone looking for a cheaper alternative to the iPhone and LG Prada. Now those other phones cost more money, so naturally they will have better features but I will bring up in my full review in a few days that I don’t really know if those extra features are really worth the higher price tag compared to this phone.

There is probably a charge to use the web, you would have to check with your local T-mobile provider to get pricing. I was able to find some settings that supposedly doesn’t charge you but I wont really know until later this month when I get my bill. Unlimited Internet from T-mobile isn’t very expensive if you use it a lot, I believe its only like 8 to 20 bucks a month. But I dont surf the web on my phone very often. You can find settings online pretty easy just do a google search for tmobile settings. Also I found this little website: http://tmobileus.wdsglobal.com/phonefirst

If you dont see your phone on there just pick a phone that is as close as far as the Operating System goes and answer the questions, its supposed to text message you something that installs all the correct settings. I haven’t tried it yet but will for my next phone.

The browser on the phone is an Opera based browser, its pretty decent. If you have ever used an opera browser you should know they are pretty good as far as speed and reliability. The MotoRokr does not have Wi-Fi so the internet is all done over the tmobile network.

  11. Max Says:

That website doesnt have a rokr e6. Also can you explain how to setup the phone for tmobile for email internet text anything that a regular tmoible phone would have when u buy it at a tmobile store.

  12. ragi Says:

i realy would like to know where u got the phone from. i have been loking for a good price.

  13. Max Says:

a good price for the phone would be off of popularelect.com

  14. olivia Says:

I just want to know if text messaging is a real pain in the butt. im assuming there will be no texting and driving for me if i have to use the stylus, use both hands and look at what im doing. also, can you tap the screen with anything other than your fingers or the stylus? (i know this may sound weird but id be interested in knowing whether my long nails could come in handy). thanks in advance and can’t wait for your full review.

  15. cellrater Says:

You know, I really don’t mind the stylus or text messaging all that much for that matter. Maybe I am just not picky enough but I know that some people will find it very annoying to have to use the stylus instead of just their finger. You can tap the screen with just about anything but I would be careful not to scratch the screen, a fingernail should be ok. I carry the phone in my front pocket and haven’t noticed any scratches on it yet so it seems to hold up pretty well.

  16. Max Says:
