Dvorak says iPhone battery only lasts 40 minutes

April 5th, 2007 - posted in Apple

Apple iPhoneSo across the boards today, almost all of the websites I visit were talking about a post by John C. Dvorak (former editorialist for MacWorld), who claims Apple should pull the plug on their upcoming phone. Dvorak says that he recently spoke to a Cingular Employee who mentions multiple problems with the soon to be released cellphone. According to the rep, the phone has many issues ranging from a 40 minute total talk time to an interface which “fouls up constantly”.

I could see how a phone like that would freeze in the wrong hands; one of my favorite phones over the years has been my Nokia N80 which has been mentioned by people to freeze a lot. Then you speak to other users who own this phone and they have no problem with it. After using the phone for a few months I think the problem boils down to the fact that some people are trying to run far too many programs at once on these phones. The N80 is a small computer and gives you the ability to run multiple applications at once easily but if you aren’t paying attention to your file manager you could have stuff running in the background and not even know it. I could easily see this as being a problem with something like the iPhone. The problem is that there are far too many idiots in the world and not enough idiot proof products.

As for the 40 minute thing I am skeptical, I mean I know the phone has a huge screen but I don’t think apple would release a phone with that low of a talk time for the price they are asking. Now I could see the 40 minute mark becoming a reality with bluetooth on, music player going, and screen at full brightness while surfing the web or something like that. I guess only time will tell.

What do you guys think? Would you still be interested in buying the iPhone for $500 if the talk time is only 40 minutes?

Dude is this true? If so, the LG Prada and mostly the Rokr 36 will emerge as hits in this next year.

40 min. ?, its better than my old siemens s6 - only 5 min. but the device is 15 year old :)))

Maybe this is true for the demo models but no way for the retail version. Wasn’t Dvorak the guy that also said Apple should shut up shop a few years back. He’s not known for making good predictions :)

True, but if you look at the talk time of some high end phones with really great displays (like some of nokia’s N-Series line) and compare that to a phone with a screen thats more than twice the size it wouldnt be too far fetched to believe that with bluetooth on, some frequent text messaging and web surfing and then a nice long phone conversation that a phone with a screen that size could run out of juice relativity fast. This could explain the recent rumors of no wi-fi on the iPhone either.
