Samsung Upstage makes you do a double-take

April 1st, 2007, posted in Samsung

Samsung UpstageSo it looks like Samsung will be releasing its Ultra Music phone here in the US; Now named the Samsung Upstage SPH-M620. From what I have been reading it looks like this phone may be carried by Sprint in the near future but I am sure you will be able to import one of these bad boys to work with T-Mobile or other network. The most interesting thing about this phone is the double sided setup. One side of the phone looks like a simple standard Samsung with a small wide screen just big enough for phone numbers; but flip the switch on the side of the phone and the screen goes off, you flip the phone over to reveal a larger second screen on the other side of the phone made for music and video control.

This whole double sided thing reminds me of the Nokia I just mentioned in my last post, but once again this looks like a nice little low end phone with MP3 and music as a main attraction (are we seeing a trend here?). Personally I think this phone is ok but I will wait for the Samsung Ultra Video to hit the streets, something about the chrome details and the swiveling screen gets me all hot and bothered.

What do you guys think? Is this phone hot or not?

Nokia 5700: a new twist on cell design

April 1st, 2007, posted in Nokia

Nokia 5700It wasn’t very long ago that T-mobile began carrying the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music, I had a chance to play with it for a few moments about a week ago and walked away moderately impressed. The 5300 offered by T-mobile is a nice entry level handset for most users but now Nokia has announced their 5700 which combines the functionality of the 5300 and the rotating design found in the 3250.

The 5700 has a decent sized QVGA screen, runs quad-band GSM/EDGE, has bluetooth, a 3.4mm headset for your stereo headphones, and has a 2 megapixel camera which will also do video calls (if your provider allows it). Running Symbian S60 the phone supports a number of audio formats including: WMA, MP3, AAC, as well as eAAC+ and MP4. According to Nokia, the phone supports up to 1500 tracks using the optional 2gb MicoSD card. The most interesting feature of this phone is the rotating base which shows off a keypad on one end and music playback controls on the other. Definitely an attention getter once this phone hits the streets. I will have to keep my eye out for it when it hits Europe for about 350 EUR sometime around Q2 of 2007

Cingular gets its way: No more WiFi for the iPhone?

April 1st, 2007, posted in Apple

Apple iPhoneThe guys over at phonescoop.com have a new article up discussing some FCC documents which detail the latestspecs of Apple’s upcoming iPhone and no, it doesn’t have Wi-Fi. According to phonescoop, The phone was originally approved for GSM/EDGE 850 & 1900 with bluetooth and wifi; but now looking at these final documents, wifi seems to be missing. Quite a blow for the iPhone. AT&T/Cingular may have talked Apple out of keeping this feature as well as Apple’s widgets which seem to now be replaced by other Cingular services (Cingular Video / Media Mail). According to an Apple spokesperson the wifi was dropped to preserver battery life.
